Candidate Orice

Candidate Oricet

Here I am, wearing my thin net veil and Candidate uniform. Inside, I’m shiny and new, hopeful about my new life. Strange and alienating though it was at first, I didn’t expect to feel lonely or lost for long.

White Veiled Novice

Investment day

This is a photo of Dad and me on my Profession Day, when my official title changed from Candidate Orice to Novice Orice. At the time, I had already been subjected to rigorous training in the Motherhouse for three years, and though I felt overly confined—almost imprisoned–I didn’t tell my parents (or anyone else) how much I longed to escape. Convinced that I had no other choice, I made the most of it.  (See Chapter 27 for details.)
