White Veiled Novice

Investment day

This is a photo of Dad and me on my Profession Day, when my official title changed from Candidate Orice to Novice Orice. At the time, I had already been subjected to rigorous training in the Motherhouse for three years, and though I felt overly confined—almost imprisoned–I didn’t tell my parents (or anyone else) how much I longed to escape. Convinced that I had no other choice, I made the most of it.  (See Chapter 27 for details.)

  1. You were about 19 then?
Some young people who are not in a convent have circumstances in which they feel “confined” or “trapped” and do not feel they can tell anyone. They cold probably relate to you.
